Project Management

What does project management entail?

Project management is the structured organization of people, resources and time to achieve a concrete goal, within the agreed frameworks of scope, time and budget. But a project is only truly successful if the result is not only delivered, but also adds value and is well embedded within the organization. The project leader plays a central role in this: he or she monitors progress during the project, makes adjustments where necessary and connects all parties involved, both substantively and technically, through all phases of the project.

Whether it is a new product, a system, a facilities project or a process improvement: our project managers ensure a structured and well thought-out approach, from start to implementation. Always with an eye for the end users, so that the result is not only right on paper, but also works in practice.

Commonly used project management methodologies

We believe in the combination of making strides and learning together. That's why we work closely together, as if we were part of your team. We think along, collaborate and help you make the right choices. In doing so, we look at the most appropriate project management methods. Whether it's Waterfall, Agile, SAFe, Lean or a hybrid approach. We provide a method that fits your organization and goals, so that change makes a real impact.

  • Waterfall: A linear, phase-based approach in which each phase (such as analysis, design, construction, test, implementation) is not started until the previous one is completed. Suitable for projects with a clear beginning and end and stable requirements.
  • Agile: An iterative and incremental approach in which work is delivered in short cycles (sprints). Focused on flexibility, collaboration and continuous improvement. Often used in software development, but more broadly applicable.
  • Scrum (part of Agile): A widely used Agile variant with fixed roles (scrum master, product owner, team), sprints of 1-4 weeks and daily stand-ups. Ideal for teams that want quick delivery and continuous improvement.
  • SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework): A framework for applying Agile at scale within larger organizations. Provides structure, roles and coordination across multiple teams. Suitable for complex projects with many stakeholders.
  • Lean: Based on Lean principles from industry. Focuses on eliminating waste, creating value and optimizing processes. Combines well with other methodologies.
  • Hybrid approaches: A combination of different methodologies, for example Agile within teams and a traditional Waterfall approach for planning, decision-making or governance. Increasingly chosen because it offers flexibility as well as structure, tailored to the context of the project.

The benefits of project management

Good project management offers several benefits and puts into practice the key success factors of strategic and operational project management.

  • Clear goals and focus: Project management helps bring into focus from the start what needs to be done.
  • Grip on time, costs and budget: With a structured approach, resources, deadlines and budgets are monitored, so there are no surprises.
  • Higher quality of result: Quality is continuously managed, with a focus on an end result that meets the agreements made.
  • Better collaboration: Clear roles, responsibilities, consultation times and a clear structure ensure efficient collaboration, both internally and externally.
  • Fewer risks: Risks are identified early and managed effectively, preventing problems or resolving them in a timely manner.
  • Effective implementation: There is a focus not only on delivery, but also ensuring that the result is actually used in practice and adds value.
  • Satisfied stakeholders: Clear communication and a structured process ensure that stakeholders know where they stand, which increases support and promotes satisfaction.

Project management pitfalls

Project management often seems manageable on paper: a clear schedule, a defined budget and a clear goal. Yet in practice, there are several pitfalls that can get in the way of project success. Recognizing these pitfalls is the first step to avoiding them. Some common pitfalls:

  • Unclear goals and expectations
Without a shared vision and clear objectives, confusion or noise quickly ensues. This leads to delays, frustrations and suboptimal results.
  • Lack of support
A project rolled out "top-down" without user or stakeholder involvement runs the risk of failing as soon as it is implemented. Engagement and communication are crucial.
  • Not enough flexibility
Change is inevitable. A rigid approach without room for adjustment makes it difficult to respond to advancing insight or changing circumstances.
  • Losing grip on time and budget
Without proper planning and progress monitoring, projects easily slip. Small deviations can quickly have major consequences.
  • Too much focus on delivery, not enough on implementation
A project is only successful when the result is actually used and adds value. Too often the emphasis is on 'delivery' instead of sustainable anchoring in the organization.
