Webinar Recap: Data-Driven Management for Housing Associations

How can you ensure that data not only provides insights but also truly helps guide your organization? During the webinar“Guiding Housing Associations with Insights Using Microsoft Fabric”on June 23, Remco Nicolai, Principal Consultant at Valid, explored this topic in greater depth.

During the webinar, it became clear that the solution does not lie in yet more tools, but rather in bringing these components together. Microsoft Fabric plays a central role in this: a single, integrated platform that brings together data storage, processing, and analysis.

This creates a single central location for data (OneLake), so that data is no longer scattered across different systems and no longer needs to be continuously copied.

From Reporting to Data-Driven Management

An important insight from the webinar is that many organizations get bogged down in reporting, while the real value lies in data-driven decision-making. This requires a different approach to both your data platform and your workflow. Key steps in this process include:

  • Unlock and integrate data sources without adding unnecessary complexity
  • Decouple data from operational systems to ensure that reports remain stable
  • Making data available in a consistent and reliable manner from a single source

Once this foundation is in place, there will be room to move toward (near) real-time insights, predictive analytics, and AI applications.

Toward a Future-Proof Data Platform and AI

The webinar also took a closer look at the technical setup. It focuses on a layered architecture (source, processed, and ready for reporting), in which data is enriched step by step.

A key development in this regard is the use of a so-called mirrored database or lakehouse and a central data storage system in Fabric. This makes data from source systems (such as Zig365 or Tobias365) available frequently and in near real time.

This ensures that organizations become less dependent on complex integrations or ad hoc data extractions and gain faster insight into up-to-date data.

AI as the Next Step

With developments such as Fabric IQ, it becomes possible to automatically generate insights and answer questions on top of your data platform—for example, via Copilot. This helps you recognize patterns more quickly, identify anomalies, and make better-informed decisions.

However, this requires that your data and data model are in order. Without consistent definitions and reliable data, the value of AI remains limited. Organizations with a solid foundation can deploy AI in a targeted manner and expand its use step by step within their existing processes.

Greater control over governance and collaboration

In addition to insight, control is an important issue. By working from a single platform, you can better centralize governance, security, and data access.

In addition, a shared data environment makes it easier for teams to collaborate and work with the same definitions and datasets. This prevents disputes over figures and speeds up decision-making.

Practical Application in the Industry

Based on practical experience, it became clear that housing associations are making this transition in stages. They often start small—for example, by making source data accessible in a central environment—and then continue to expand the platform.

This approach makes it possible to quickly deliver value while simultaneously working on a scalable and future-proof solution.

Data-driven work is an ongoing process

The main takeaway from the webinar: data-driven work is not a one-time project, but an ongoing process.

Investing in a solid data foundation, a clear structure, and strong governance is essential for making data-driven decisions on an ongoing basis and for being prepared for future developments such as AI.
